Focusing on your image is not superficial or a luxury.  It is an investment in your success. Think of your image as a strategic communications tool.  You can use it to set yourself apart and gain an advantage over your competition.  Follow these 8 tips and you’ll be well on your way.

1. Your appearance and image tell a story before you ever have the chance to say a word.  Make sure it tells the story you intend with a professional look.

2. Identify three words that best describe you. What would you want someone to say about you when they meet you for the first time? What words would you want your boss to use to describe you?

3. Figure out what makes you unique and make sure it is communicated through your business cards and social media.  (Linked in, Twitter, etc)

4. Select clothes that support your story and reflect your style and personality while keeping within the guidelines of your company’s dress code.

5. Make sure your clothes fit your body shape and size.  Invest in quality not quantity. Tailor your clothes to fit you perfectly and they will look more expensive and professional.

6. Details matter.   Polish your shoes, keep your hair and make up and glasses updated and make sure you are always well groomed.

7. Keep your office and car clean.  Your space is an extension of your image. A clean area sends the message that you are organized and care about details.

8. Carry a professional tote.  Carrying multiple bags or a backpack doesn’t say serious professional. Keep it organized.
